The Turkish Army will receive two AH-1W Super Cobra attack helicopters from the US by 2011 under a foreign military sales contract.

Turkey’s defence minister Vecdi Gönül said the process for the delivery of helicopter gunships was underway.

In 2009, the US Government agreed to sell an undisclosed number of Super Cobras to help its Nato ally, which has a shortage of combat helicopter.

Currently, the Turkish Army operates six AH-1Ws, which will be increased in 2014 or 2015.

Manufacturing work for the AH-1W Super Cobra helicopters is being carried out by Turkey in cooperation with AgustaWestland.
