The US Army has awarded a contract to General Dynamics to supply high-performance stabilised commander’s weapon stations (SCWS).
The SCWS is specifically designed to mount on a variety of military platforms and works with a high-performance .50-calibre machine gun.
The targeting characteristics of the SCWS are equal to those of the current M1A1 fire-control system, which includes a laser range finder and thermal site.
The weapon station allows military vehicle commanders to acquire and engage targets from inside the protection of an armoured vehicle.
Work under the $92m contract will be carried out at the company’s facilities in Ohio, Alabama and Sterling Heights. It is expected to be complete by February 2013.
