The UK Ministry of Defence has awarded a contract to Antonov for the development of a two-speed alternator for military vehicle applications.
The alternator will significantly increase the electrical power of vehicles at low engine speeds through an active clutch mechanism, according to newspress.co.uk.
The alternator’s technology allows it to match the output of a larger single-speed alternator with two different speeds.
It is capable of replacing two or more alternators that are often required for heavy-duty vehicle applications.
Antonov will carry out the engineering design work in cooperation with Prestolite Electric, a manufacturer of alternators and electrical motors.
