Northrop Grumman has launched the latest variant of the combat-proven Wheelbarrow unmanned ground vehicle, which is to be used for the remote handling and surveillance of hazardous threats by the UK MoD.
The Northrop-developed Wheelbarrow mk9 vehicle incorporates significant advances in technology and performance and a range of new features that will improve its capabilities for both civil security and defence applications.

Northrop Grumman Information Systems unmanned ground vehicles managing director Kevin Rooney said that the latest Wheelbarrow vehicle combined greater speed, mobility, exceptional payload and reach capabilities with the latest control, communications and camera specifications.
The bomb disposal vehicle features digital communications for greater security, an enhanced user-friendly command console, touch-screen facility, joystick control, a wireless hand controller for local remote control and greater functionality including preset positions.
The vehicle also has a dedicated separate data channel for added sensor integration, a payload capacity of 150kg and a maximum speed of 5km/h.
Wheelbarrow mk9 has a modular telescopic arm with seven degrees of freedom and a maximum reach of over 6m. It can climb a 45° stairway.
