EU defence ministers met the Spanish Mediterranean island of Mallorca to discuss promoting the Lisbon Treaty bloc’s military role, the training mission in Somalia and rescuing the over-budget A400M military plane.

Spanish Defence Minister Carme Chacon, who chaired the two-day meeting, said that Spain would focus on promoting security cooperation with strategic partners during its EU presidency.

The ministers were also expected to discuss the EU’s ongoing missions in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Somalia and Haiti.

A special session was to be held with defence ministers from five Maghreb countries in north Africa in an effort to strengthen security cooperation in the Euro-Mediterranean area.

The second-day discussions went ahead on the EU’s relations with other strategic partners of which EU-Nato relations were also high on the agenda.
