The US Army’s CH-47D Chinook aircraft have been successfully equipped with Advanced Threat Infrared Countermeasures (ATIRCM) system by BAE Systems.

The ATIRCM system is a laser-based countermeasures system that safeguards helicopters from missile attacks.

The system along with the AAR-57 Common Missile Warning System significantly enhances overall aircraft survivability against possible threats.

The Chinook is a multi-mission, heavy-lift transport helicopter, which primarily undergoes missions including troop transport, artillery, ammunition, fuel, water, barrier materials, supplies and equipment on the battlefield.

The integration of the new countermeasures systems is part of the Army’s ATIRCM quick-reaction capability programme.
