The British Army’s new AW159 Lynx Wildcat multirole military helicopter has successfully completed its debut flight at AgustaWestland’s Yeovil facility.

The helicopter completed a wide range of general handling checks and satisfied performance requirements during the flight.

Two additional aircraft will join the AW159 Lynx in 2010 to complete full-scale operational flight testing and its role equipment.

The 6t multirole military helicopter is powered by two latest CTS800 engines which can produce 1,281shp providing the aircraft with high-performance capabilities.

The cockpit of the helicopter includes a fully integrated display system using four 10in×8in primary displays and the sensors include a nose-mounted IR/TV imager with built-in laser designator.

The helicopter also features an integrated defensive aids suite that includes a missile warning system, radar warning receivers and a countermeasures dispensing system.

Lynx Wildcat will serve in the battlefield performing a wide range of tasks including reconnaissance, command and control, transportation of troops and materiel, and the provision of force protection.

The UK Ministry of Defence has ordered a total of 62 helicopters for the army and navy to execute land and maritime missions.

The first aircraft is scheduled to be delivered in 2011 and is expected to be fully operational with the army in 2014 and with the navy in 2015.
