The US Army has contracted Alliant Techsystems for the production of small-calibre ammunition.

Under the $93m contract, the company will supply small-calibre ammunition from the 5.56mm, 7.62mm, and .50-calibre cartridge families.

Soldier weapons that support the small-calibre ammunition include M161A1/A2 rifle, M4 carbine, M249 squad automatic weapon, M240 machine gun, .50-calibre M2 machine gun and sniper rifles.

Work will be carried out at the company’s Lake City Army Ammunition Plant (LCAAP) in Independence, Missouri.
