The German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) will receive ten additional Fennek light armoured reconnaissance vehicles for its joint fire support teams (JFST).
The Fennek built by defence contractor Krauss-Maffei Wegmann is a four-wheeled armed reconnaissance vehicle available in both two or four-wheel drive that is capable of moving at a top speed of 115km/h.
The vehicle is equipped with an MG 3 (machine gun) and additional armour can be fitted if the mission demands.
The vehicle provides protection agianst 7.62mm rounds, nuclear, biological, chemical warfare and anti-personnel mines.
The JFST performs joint fire support operations in conjunction with the Bundeswehr to coordinate the extensive and joint use of army, navy and air force assets.
Ten Fenneks originally ordered by the Bundeswehr are expected to enter service by the end of 2009. The ten new JFST Fenneks will also be manufactured by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann and are expected to enter the service by 2011.
The Fennek contract is valued at €34m over the next two years.
