The US Army Combat Ammunition Systems division has awarded a $10m contract to Alliant Techsystems (ATK) for enhanced portable inductive artillery fuse setters (EPIAFS).

The EPIAFS is a product improvement of the portable inductive artillery fuse setter (PIAFS), and provides soldiers with the ability to download automated fire control data to initialise the global positioning system used to fire projectiles.

The sytem is operational on 155mm projectiles such as XM982 Excalibur, and on all rounds equipped with ATK’s precision guidance kit (PGK).

EPIAFS is also capable of setting all Nato standard fuses on projectiles fired from the M109A6 Paladin self-propelled howitzer, M777A2 lightweight towed howitzer and the future non-line-of-sight cannon.

Following the successful completion of first article acceptance testing with the army, ATK has sped up the delivery of 420 systems to the US Army and Marine Corps to meet the urgent operational requirement.
