India has built its first unmanned ground vehicle to be used for surveillance and to detect nuclear, biological and chemical weapons, as well as mines.

The vehicle has been handed over to the Indian Army for testing, reports Indian Defence Online.

The prototype of the combat vehicle is based on an infantry fighting vehicle BMP-II platform and comprises of a drive-by-wire (DBW) system which includes electromechanical actuators and drives for interfaces such as acceleration, brake, gear shifting, steering, clutch and parking brake.

The engine signals such as vehicle speed and engine rpm are obtained by a data acquisition card and displayed in a graphical user interface (GUI).

The vehicle has been developed by the combat vehicles research and development establishment located at Avadi operating under India’s defence research agency, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
