The Type M-98 is based on a commercial Isuzu TFS55HDJL (4×4) cross-country chassis modified to meet military requirements.

The layout is conventional with the engine at the front, leaving the remainder of the vehicle clear for the four-person crew, weapons, ammunition and equipment.

Combat weight is 2,750kg with the diesel engine giving a maximum road speed of about 130km/h; maximum range is quoted as 650km on roads, but this drops to about 200km cross country.
