The US Department of Defense has awarded a research grant to an LED provider to improve its Hydra Rocket System.
The award has been granted to Energy Focus, an energy-efficient technology firm, to begin the development of a solid state infrared replacement for the M-278 flare used in the rocket.
Energy Focus chief technology officer said the system is perfect because it does not generate high internal temperatures and so has higher reliablilty than conventional systems.
“We are confident that we can build on our advanced thermal and optical technology to produce the best system in the United States,” he said.
To develop the technology the US army has awarded Energy Focus a phase I small business innovative research grant.
