The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) has placed orders with Australia's W&E Platt to provide 60 Platt MR550 bi-metal ring mount protected weapon stations for firepower and protection to vehicle gunners.

The ring mount weighs under 400kg and features a dual layer of spaced armour solution, which provides protection against improvised explosive devices and kinetic threats from small arms fire and shell splinters.

The mount, a variant of the MR550 protected ring mount series, can be equipped with M2HB 12.7mm heavy machine gun, mk19 40mm automatic grenade launcher, MAG-58 / M240 7.62mm general purpose machine gun and the Minimi / M249 5.56mm light machine gun.

The protected weapon stations will be installed on RG32M 4×4 mine hardened patrol vehicles, which have recently been ordered from BAE Systems OMC South Africa for the Swedish Army.

Delivery of the first ring mounts will begin by the end of 2011, with final deliveries scheduled for early 2012.

The ring mounts are also installed on Brazil's Iveco VBTP 6×6 armoured personnel carrier and the British Army's new Warthog protected all-terrain vehicles.
