The Israeli Defence Ministry is in negotiations with the Pentagon to purchase US military equipment in Iraq, which is due to be laid as surplus or sold, as US troops prepare to withdraw from Iraq and Afghanistan.

The Jerusalem Post has reported that the Israeli military is looking to replace its aging fleet of Humvee combat vehicles with those the US will be phasing out.

The nation is also thought to be interested in acquiring surplus weapons and ammunition the US will no longer require, following the withdrawal from active operations in Iraq.

Each year Israel receives about $3bn from the US in direct foreign assistance, which equates to a fifth of the US foreign aid budget.

Recently, the US provided Israel with $415m for procurement, research and development of joint US-Israeli missile defence projects, which included $205m for the procurement of the Iron Dome system.
