General Dynamics (GD) Armament and Technical Products has delivered its four millionth Hydra 70 air-to-ground rocket to the US Army.

The US Army has awarded a delivery contract to GD, the sole manufacturer of the Hydra rocket, to deliver the rockets until April 2015 if all options are exercised.

The Hydra 70 is a 2.75in-diameter rocket, fired from US Army Apache and Kiowa Warrior helicopters, as well as helicopters and aircraft of other armed forces.

Hydra consists of two main components, the mk66 rocket motor and the warhead, which varies depending on the requirements of the mission.

Work on the rocket is performed at the company’s facility in Arkansas, US.
