The US Army has released its proposed budget request seeking $144.9bn for fiscal year 2012 with an additional $71.1bn for overseas contingency operations.

The budget request aims to restore a balanced force whilst increasing funding for active component operating tempo (OPTEMPO) and related programmes.

The allocation includes $1.5bn for the modernisation of Black Hawk helicopters and $1.4bn for procuring 32 new and 15 remanufactured CH-47 Chinook helicopters with upgraded avionics.

The army modernisation programme will also include ground combat vehicle development, upgrades to existing vehicles and a drone system for aerial observation of the battlespace.

The FY 2012 budget will sustain and prepare the US Army for future challenges through advanced personnel, training and advanced equipment.
