The modernisation plan is based on two documents, one dealing with army weaponry, while the other detailed measures to develop the Armenian defence industry.

Armenia’s Defence Minister Seyran Ohanian said the programme would enhance the army’s long-range strike capacity to prevent enemy movements deep inside the entire theatre of hostilities.

The Armenian military is already equipped with short-range tactical missiles capable of striking military and civilian targets in Azerbaijan.

The Armenian defence budget for 2011 is projected at $405m, according to Azatutyun.am.
