The UN has sent a team to investigate a gunfire attack from a North Sudanese Army helicopter in the disputed border region of southern Sudan.

The Southern Sudanese Army has alleged that North Sudanese forces attacked the south in the region of Bahr al-Ghazal amid a planned referendum on independence for the south on 9 January 2011.

Lieutenant General Obuto Mamur said the alleged attack was just the latest in a continuous campaign of harassment by the north.

“Their intention is to bring us to war but we will not be provoked,” he added.

The UN said it was considering sending an additional 2,000 peacekeeping troops to the region, according to the Irish Times.
