The level of Macedonian arms expenditures will be low for the 2011 fiscal year due to low defence budget allocations.

The Macedonian Army will receive only $6.9m of the overall defence budget of $128m for 2011 to purchase new armaments and equipment as part of modernisation efforts.

The defence allocation is the lowest in the past decade and could endanger both national security and the country’s bid to join Nato, warned critics.

Macedonian Defence Minister Zoran Konjanovski in 2011 will spend $13.9m less than 2010 and $55m less than the proposed 2009 funding level, according to United Press International.
