L3Harris Technologies has been awarded a contract worth over $65m to manufacture solid rocket motors for the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) used by the US Army.

Under the contract, L3Harris will fabricate, evaluate, and supply M124 rocket motors along with igniters, exit cones, and related components and services required for the ATACMS programme. Deliveries are planned between 2027 and 2028.

L3Harris has supported the US Army’s ATACMS programme efforts for over three decades from its production facility at Camden, Arkansas.

The Camden facility manufactures more than 115,000 solid rocket motors annually for various programmes and conducts over 6,000 hot-fire tests each year.

Currently, the company is expanding its operations in Camden, building over 20 new propulsion facilities to address increased demand.

In addition to this facility, L3Harris produces additional ATACMS components, such as Arm and Firing Devices, are manufactured at site in Cincinnati, Ohio.

ATACMS is a conventional surface-to-surface missile system designed to engage targets at distances beyond the reach of traditional Army cannons, rockets, and other missile systems.

The system uses a WDU18 500-pound class blast fragmentation warhead and has a maximum range of 300 kilometres, according to its manufacturer, Lockheed Martin.

ATACMS missiles launch from both HIMARS and MLRS M270 platforms.

L3Harris missile propulsion, missile solutions president Scott Alexander said: “L3Harris remains focused on delivering advanced propulsion solutions to meet the needs of the ATACMS programme.

“These contracts demonstrate our ongoing commitment to equip the US Army and allied forces with reliable, combat-proven missile technology that enhances operational readiness.”

The contract for solid rocket motors follows L3Harris’s recent agreement with the Orange County Board of Supervisors to expand its solid rocket motor production in the Virginia county. The planned $1.27bn investment will establish the Virginia Advanced Propulsion Facilities (VAPF), increasing manufacturing space at the location.
