Kongsberg has received orders to provide additional Protector remote weapon stations (RWS) low profile for the US Army’s M1A2 Abrams main battle tank (MBT), spare parts and engineering services.

The Nkr330m ($39.7m) orders have been received as part of a contract signed in August 2012.

The Protector RWS low profile is a variant of the commonly remotely operated weapon station (CROWS), modified to improve the M1A2 Abrams MBT commander’s visibility, Kongsberg stated.

Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace Protech Systems executive vice-president Pål Bratlie said: “This contract confirms Kongsberg’s strong relationship with the US Army, and ordering the Protector low profile CROWS system for the Abrams MBTs and spare parts for sustainment, confirms their continued commitment.”

The CROWS system variant has been designed for small and medium calibre weapons and can be installed on any type of platform.

The Protector RWS low profile’s detached line of sight enables the gunner to keep their sights on target.

The system features a thermal imager with a dual field of view, autofocus and e-zoom, and a colour daylight camera that provides a wide field of view of up to 45°. In addition, it offers more than 30 times optical magnified close-up view of the target area when identifying and engaging long-distance targets, according to Kongsberg.

The eye-safe laser range finder of the RWS is claimed to provide extremely accurate range measurements.

As of 2017, the Protector system has been chosen by 18 nations.
