Kongsberg and Milrem conduct live firing of PROTECTOR RT from Type-X RCV

The combat vehicle equipped with the remote turret provides better firepower and tactical capabilities.

European autonomous systems developer Milrem Robotics and Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace have performed a live firing from the Type-X Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV).

The firing was done using Kongsberg’s PROTECTOR Remote Turret (RT40) for the first time from the RCV.

The RT40 includes a Bushmaster 30mm cannon and a linkless ammunition handling system.

The latest live-firing was part of a joint project by Kongsberg and Milrem Robotics to develop the Nordic Robotic Wingman (NRW).

The NRW robotic fighting vehicle, which is based on the Type-X, is expected to fulfil the needs of Nordic and Western European nations, as well as the US.

The model will be equipped with modernised PROTECTOR RTs to support main battle tanks and infantry fighting vehicles.

The Type-X model is being showcased at Eurosatory 2022.

Developed by Milrem Robotics, the Type-X has several intelligent features including follow-me, waypoint navigation, and obstacle detection.

In addition, the model’s Indirect Drive feature facilitates remote-controlled activities at high speed.

With better firepower and tactical capabilities, the Type-X RCV enables mechanised units to focus on troop survivability by increasing the standoff distance from enemy positions.

A cannon up to 50mm, anti-tank missiles, and a drone can be attached to the low maintenance vehicle to enhance its situational awareness capability.

Kongsberg has been delivering remote weapon systems for more than two decades.

In December 2020, the Norwegian firm signed a $118m contract to deliver the Protector RS4 Remote Weapon Stations (RWS) for the British Army Mechanized Infantry Vehicle (MIV) programme.

Awarded by Thales UK, the contract involved delivering Protector RWS for the British Army’s new fleet of Boxer 8×8 vehicles.
