The Arrow-3 weapon system has successfully demonstrated the hit-to-kill capability to engage a high altitude exo-atmospheric target during the campaign, which was led by the Ministry of Defense and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI).

IMDO director Moshe Patel said: “Ten challenging years of development and work have culminated in this moment: the Arrow 3 weapon system completed a test campaign, during which an Arrow 3 interceptor completed full interception of the target.

“In addition, the fact that the test was conducted in Alaska, tens of thousands of kilometres away from Israel, is another significant achievement that demonstrates the operational capabilities of the Arrow 3 system to successfully face any threat.”

The Arrow 3 weapon system can intercept ballistic missiles outside of the atmosphere.

The campaign also involved the use of Raytheon-built AN-TPY2 radar to validate operational interoperability. The radar system is not part of the weapon system.

MDA director vice admiral John Hill said: “These successful tests mark a major milestone in the development of the Arrow weapon system. This unique success in Alaska provides confidence in future Israeli capabilities to defeat the developing threats in the region.

“We are committed to assisting the Government of Israel in upgrading its national missile defence capability to defend the State of Israel and deployed US forces from emerging threats.”

IAI MLM Division is the primary contractor for the development of the Arrow weapon system interceptor.

Industry partners for the project include Elbit Systems’ Elsira Company, Boeing, Tomer, and Rafael.

Rafael develops the Sparrow target missile and other components of the weapon system.

The Arrow 3 weapon system is part of Israel’s multi-layered defence array, which also includes the Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and Arrow 2 weapon systems.
