The UK’s Defence and Security Accelerator (DASA) has launched a competition seeking innovations in wearable biocompatible technologies.
The competition, titled Generation-after-next Wearable Technologies, is being held by the DASA on behalf of the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl).
It is seeking innovations in wearable biocompatible technologies that go beyond physical parameters such as heart rate.
The Dstl intends to use technologies that can measure the data based on an individual’s body fluids, including blood, tissue fluids, sweat, tears, and saliva.
Funding of up to £750,000 is kept for proposals for generation-after-next wearable technologies. Proposals are required to be submitted by 25 August 2022.
The aim of this competition is to explore the potential of new wearable technologies in protecting the health and wellbeing of defence and security staff.

The competition will focus on innovations in devices/assay systems, semi and fully implantable devices, studies, and sensor systems that offer accurate measures of biomarkers.
The proposals must focus on covering one or more aspects that include biocompatibility, the future tolerability of platforms for human use, and the maintenance of the performance of the sensor’s capabilities for longer hours.
Participants could also focus on technologies that measure types of analyte, and aspects of adaptability and flexibility of assays.
By measuring biomarkers present in an individual’s body, generation-after-next wearables will be able to generate quick and long-term data about the impact of occupational stressors on defence and security personnel.
This data will help initiate timely intervention and reduce the risk of diseases and non-battle injuries.
