American Rheinmetall Vehicles has selected L3Harris Technologies to pursue the US Army’s new Optionally Manned Fighting Vehicle (OMFV) programme.

The OMFV development is aimed at replacing the Bradley infantry fighting vehicle (IFV).

American Rheinmetall Vehicles is a subsidiary of Germany-based Rheinmetall Defence and serves as the prime contractor under the partnership.

American Rheinmetall Vehicles managing director Mathew Warnick said: “We are excited to have L3Harris join our growing team to support the US Army’s OMFV programme.

“Their experience in open architecture, communications, and cybersecurity bring tremendous capability to the American Rheinmetall Vehicles team as we prepare our digitally engineered OMFV to provide our soldiers overmatch now and for the future.”

The teaming agreement will see L3Harris’ open system design and equipment manufacturing expertise integrated with the modularity of American Rheinmetall Vehicles’ Lynx next-generation fighter vehicle.

According to the companies, this combination will result in an OMFV offering that can be easily upgradable.

L3Harris will provide vehicle mission systems, cybersecurity, as well as its modular open systems approach (MOSA) for the Lynx IFV.

The MOSA approach can enable ‘cross-platform and cross-domain commonality of parts and subsystems’ for easy upgrades.

L3Harris Domestic Business Development vice-president James Gear said: “We have a long history providing similar support to multiple platforms using our MOSA approach for mission systems and electronic warfare.

“We look forward to working with American Rheinmetall Vehicles to further expand into the ground defence vehicle market.”

Last October, American Rheinmetall Vehicles partnered with Textron Systems for the OMFV programme.
