Notably, the number of robotics-related patent applications in the aerospace, defence & security industry was 453 in Q2 2023, versus 914 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 9% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Boeing filed the most robotics patents within the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q2 2023. The company filed 12 robotics-related patents in the quarter, compared with 19 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Toshiba with 9 robotics patent filings, Sony Group (8 filings), and State Grid Corporation of China (7 filings) in Q2 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by the US with a 57% share of total patent filings
The largest share of robotics related patent filings in the aerospace, defence & security industry in Q2 2023 was in the US with 57%, followed by China (21%) and Japan (6%). The share represented by the US was 15% higher than the 42% share it accounted for in Q1 2023.
