Australian counter-drone technology supplier DroneShield is set to bolster its research and development operations in the US.

The move will see a doubling of the firm’s US workforce, with over 30% of the new roles focused on software development and enhancing its AI capabilities.

DroneShield is also set to establish a second location at its Virginia-based headquarters as part of this strategic investment.

This expansion is expected to improve the team’s capacity to cater to the growing demand for counter-unmanned systems (CUxS) solutions. It comes after the company’s recent announcement regarding the expansion of its Australian production plants and the opening of a new office in the EU.

These global expansions are part of a concentrated effort by DroneShield to widen its global presence and establish a stronger physical proximity to clients in crucial markets.

DroneShield said that the enlarged US facility will help it speed up its product development cycles and improve service to its expanding customer base.

DroneShield CEO Matt McCrann said: “As we continue to scale our operations globally, this expansion in the US plays a crucial role in enhancing our ability to innovate and deliver advanced solutions for the evolving defence industrial base right here in the US.

“We’re investing in the future of defence, and our growing footprint and impact in the US market directly supports that effort.”

This expansion aligns DroneShield with the US Department of Defense’s (DoD) push for quick, risk-embracing acquisition of innovative counter-drone solutions.

In December 2024, US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin had authorised a new classified blueprint aimed at strengthening defences against uncrewed aerial systems (UAS), commonly known as drones.

DroneShield chief product and technology officer Angus Bean said: “Expanding our US technology team strengthens our ability to support critical programmes and deliver advanced solutions with greater speed and precision. This investment ensures end users benefit from responsive, real-time support and the depth of expertise required for mission success.”
