Lockheed Martin has unveiled the prototype of a new enhanced AN/TPQ-36 radar it has developed for the US Army.

Also known as the EQ-36 Counterfire Target Acquisition Radar, it will provide soldiers with the capability to detect, classify, track and determine the location of enemy indirect fire in either 90 or 360-degree modes.

Lockheed says the EQ-36 will replace the TPQ-36, TPQ-37 and other Cold War era radars, which are only capable of operating in a 90-degree mode.

Lockheed radar systems vice president Carl Bannar says the device is focussed on the soldier’s needs.

“It’s about giving our highly mobile brigade combat teams the rugged, battle-ready, solid-state target acquisition radar system they need to defend against today’s lethal threats,” Bannar says.

Lockheed expects the first radars to be delivered to the US Army in mid-2009.
