The US Department of Defense has funded a programme aimed at developing electronic binoculars that monitor the brain activity of troops and alerts the wearer to possible threats.

The US$6.7m contract, awarded under the Cognitive Technology Threat Warning System programme to a Northrop Grumman-led team, will run for one-year.

The team will be creating a conceptual design of the device with the option to extend the contract for further development and manufacturing, Northrop says.

Other companies on the team include Sensis, SAIC, Theia Technologies and L-3 Communications Infrared Products.

Universities include the Georgia Institute of Technology, Georgetown University, Portland State University and the University of Colorado.
