The US Navy has awarded a $96.7m contract to BAE systems to upgrade 294 United States Special Operations Command mine-resistant ambush-protected (MRAP) category 1 vehicles with independent suspension system kits.

MRAP vehicles are armoured fighting vehicles that are capable of enduring improvised explosive device attacks and ambushes, while the MRAP category 1 vehicles are mine-resistant utility vehicles (MRUV) that are specifically designed for urban operations.

The category 1 vehicles include the Cougar H 4×4, Caimen 4×4, RG-31 Nyala, RG-33, Maxxpro mine-protected vehicles and M1117 Guardian armored security vehicles.

The work will be carried out in Operation Iraqi Freedom / Operation Enduring Freedom areas and York in Pennysylvania and is expected to be complete by 31 March 2010.

The contract has been awarded by the Marine Corps Systems Command, Quantico, Virginia.
