The US Army has awarded a contract to General Dynamics for work in support of the Stryker family of combat vehicles.

Under the $134m contract, the company will provide design and engineering work and upgrades for up to 550 Stryker vehicles, currently being used in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Stryker features latest C4ISR equipment and an integrated armour package to protect soldiers against improvised explosive devices, rocket propelled grenades, and a variety of infantry weapons.

The vehicle has an operational range of 312 miles and can travel at a maximum speed exceeding 60mph on road.

Work will be carried out in Alabama, Michigan, Ohio as well as London, Ontario, Canada. It is expected to be complete by 30 June 2010.
