The US Army has awarded a contract to Oshkosh Corporation to supply more than 625 add-on armour kits for the MRAP all terrain vehicle (M-ATV).

Under the $83m contract, Oshkosh will provide explosively formed penetrator (EFP) protection kits including EFP armour, base door armour and a door-assist mechanism for the M-ATV.

The Oshkosh M-ATVs equipped with the advanced armour system solution underwent battle tests prior to the installation of EFP kits.

The M-ATV incorporates the Oshkosh-patented TAK-4 independent suspension system that allows the use of add-on armour while maintaining its agile manoeuvrability and a full payload capacity of up to 4,000lb.

The TAK-4 system provides the vehicle 70% off-road mobility for Afghanistan’s harsh mountainous terrain and unimproved roads as well as 16in of independent wheel travel to overcome obstacles and rugged environments.

Deliveries are expected to begin in April 2010 and will be complete by the end of August 2010.

To date, Oshkosh has delivered 6,619 M-ATVs, as well as spare parts kits and aftermarket in-theatre support under several contracts valued at more than $4bn awarded by the US Army Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command Life-Cycle Management Command.
