The US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded a contract to Argon ST to exercise an option for phase 2B of the Robust Surface Navigation (RSN) programme.

In 2006, DARPA selected Argon to develop new and innovative algorithms for mitigating multi-path signal errors and signal blockage that occurs in urban canyons and indoor environments.

The phase 2B contract has been valued at around $11m and follows the successful execution of phase 2A.

Argon ST president Kerry Rowe said the company will help solve the fundamental problem of navigation and geolocation in GPS-denied or degraded areas, especially in the difficult environments inside buildings and in urban canyons.

“Technologies being developed by the Argon team for DARPA will help our forces overcome these obstacles, and this award for RSN phase 2B will develop a real-time system that demonstrates this capability,” Rowe said.

Argon chose Honeywell in Minnesota, Ticom Geomatics in Texas and The Charles Stark Draper Laboratory in Massachusetts to provide the supporting software and engineering services for the RSN project.
