The Afghan National Army is set to use Nato weapons, including M-16 rifles and .50-calibre machine guns, instead of the widely used Kalashnikovs and AK-47 assault rifles.

Afghan soldiers are currently undergoing the Nato basic armourer course on the operation, control and accountability of weapons including the M-9 pistol, M-16 rifle, M203 grenade launcher, M-249 squad automatic weapon, M-240B machine gun and .50-calibre machine gun.

The first six-week Nato basic armourer course at the Central Workshop in Kabul, exposing the Afghan soldiers to familiarisation and basic maintenance of all Nato weapons, is scheduled to end this week, according to ntm-a.com.

The course will be also be taught at the five Afghan National Army Corps sites and 27 additional locations throughout Afghanistan.
