Russia will test a new model of the Kalashnikov automatic rifle in 2011, according to Izhmash director general Vladimir Grodetsky.

The new variant of the assault rifle AK-200 is based on the AK-74M, and has a weight of 3.8kg and a magazine capacity of 30, 50 or 60 rounds, according to Rianovosti.

Manufactured by Izhevsk Mechanical Works, the AK-74M is an Afghan-era weapon that features black plastic furniture including a folding buttstock and handguards.

The assault rifle allows the operation of a safety lever to set the trigger mechanism to the semi-automatic, full-automatic or safety positions.
