The US Army intends to use smartphones to enhance soldier efficiency in administrative and combat operations.
The army plans to test the smartphones as part of “connecting soldiers to digital applications” (CSDA) – a two-phase programme that allows troops to use the power of smartphone technology on the battlefield.

The first phase of the CSDA uses digitised training content modules in the form of instructional videos and interactive presentations to evaluate the technology for administrative tasks while the second phase determines the potential of the technology in an operational environment.
US Army Capabilities Integration Center deputy director Ed Mazzanti said a secure phone in a field environment provided soldiers with an easy way to report enemy activity, and send intelligence reports or live video.
Initial tests on the smartphone technology will be carried out by the soldiers of the Army Experiment Task Force at Fort Bliss in Texas.
