The Spanish Ministry of Defence has received a THeMIS Uncrewed Ground Vehicle (UGV) from robotics and autonomous systems developer Milrem Robotics.

The move comes after Milrem Robotics’ Spanish representative A Paukner was contracted by the ministry to deliver one THeMIS UGV. The vehicle was acquired by Spain as part of the Scorpion programme launched last year to assess the capabilities of existing UGVs.

With the acquisition, Spain becomes the 13th user of THEMIS UGV.

Milrem Robotics CEO Kuldar Väärsi said: “The THeMIS has already proven itself to 12 countries, seven of which are members of Nato, as a capable, robust and versatile system.

“We are glad that Spain has joined as the 13th user of THeMIS and chosen Milrem Robotics as a partner to build their robotic and autonomous system capabilities.”

The THeMIS is designed as a multi-role UGV to support dismounted troops on the battlefield. The vehicle can be used to transport a squad’s gear and other heavy equipment enabling soldiers to carry extra firepower to the conflict regions.

The UGV can also be converted into a weaponised remotely operated unit to protect the forces.

Further, it can be used for disaster relief and in intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

A Paukner CEO G Ingo Paukner said: “The THeMIS UGV is a very powerful, flexible, and easy to deploy multirole platform (also quickly configurable for disaster relief and firefighting missions, if needed) to be incorporated with leading-edge Spanish industry solutions.

“The combination of technologies provides a solid product and new capabilities to the Spanish Army which could potentially also generate joint business opportunities with other allied Armed Forces.”

Earlier this year, Milrem Robotics delivered the THeMIS Combat UGV to Thailand.
