The Royal Netherlands Army’s air defence artillerymen have launched an AMRAAM surface-to-air missile for the first time, from the Norwegian island of Andøya.
The 4m-long AMRAAM missile, with a speed of 5,000km/h, originally designed as an air-to-air missile, hit the target far beyond the visual range, according to Defpro.com.

The first live-firing exercise aimed to integrate the weapon into the army’s ground-based air defence system that covers low and medium altitudes.
The missile with a range of 75km is equipped with a radar and is capable of following its target independently after launching.
The missile was introduced in early 2009 and only the US and Norway have been authorised to launch the missiles.
