The Agency for Defense Development (ADD) has unveiled a plan to develop an active protection system (APS) for the South Korean K-2 tank in Hawaii, US.

The APS launcher, along with a 70mm guided rocket, includes a 3D detection and track radar, a heat detection and track system, a control computer, a launching system and a counter rocket.

The new system takes 0.2 to 0.3 seconds to detect and track anti-tank missiles and rockets fired from enemies, before firing its counter rockets to intercept those missiles.

The guided rocket, known as low-cost guided imaging rocket (LOGIR), has been jointly developed by Korea and the US, and features an image infrared and guided control system.

The $36m system has been in development since 2006 and is scheduled to be complete by the end of this year.
