The Scientific Systems Company (SSCI) has secured a new contract from the US Army Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office (RCCTO).
Under the contract, the SSCI will work to demonstrate the collaboration capabilities of autonomous air and space platforms to offer intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) information.

The company was selected as part of the US Army’s XTECH RCCTO army strategic rapid acquisition (AStRA) competition held last year.
The SSCI will proceed with its army responsive tactical ISR technology (ARTIST) programme, where it runs an artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) enabled software suite called Collaborative Mission Autonomy (CMA).
As a mission operating system, CMA directs uncrewed platforms to complete mission objectives with other autonomous platforms.
The SSCI will leverage existing satellites as a test asset for the space aspect of ARTIST. CMA will be able to control both the on- orbit asset and onboard electro-optic (EO) imager, and will be able to receive high-level mission service requests (MSR) from an on-ground smart phone.

This will streamline the time from a mission service requests (MSR) being sent, to the time intelligence data being received.
The ARTIST programme seeks to simplify and expedite the process through which a soldier in the field can issue a MSR from a smart phone to request intelligence data.
SSCI Solutions Development vice-president Dr Owen Brown said: “This is a very unique and potentially transformational prototyping demonstration we are going to provide to the army.
“The one-click MSR paradigm for multi-domain composability and orchestration with tactical level control is truly a huge step function in our ability to get ahead of the adversary.
“ARTIST will ‘advance the ball downfield’ of AI/ ML technologies, employed at the edge, to bring to the army new capabilities that are needed in today’s threat environment. We are extremely excited to be part of this army RCCTO effort.”
In December 2021, the US Army awarded a contract to Parsons to provide tactical applications, core infrastructure, utilities, and integration services.
