The Indian Army has called for an increase in the number of officers by another 35% to over 16,000 officers.

The proposal comes amidst a shortage of 12,349 officers against the army’s approved strength of about 46,500 officers, according to Press Trust of India.

Army officials said the increased strength was needed to meet future plans and increasing obligations on both its eastern and western fronts.

Indian armed forces are facing a shortage of 15,004 officers, including 837 in the air force and 1,818 in the navy.
