The Russian Federation Council, upper chamber of the Russian parliament has ratified a protocol to extend the 102nd Russian military base in Gyumri near Armenia.

According to the protocol, the presence will be automatically extended every five years unless one of the parties terminates the treaty six months in advance.

The military base is commanded by Russia’s North Caucasus Military District and is part of the CIS integrated air defence system.

The base has 5,000 personnel as well as S-300 surface-to-air missile systems and MiG-29 fighters, according to RIA Novosti.

Russia and Armenia signed amendments to a 1995 bilateral treaty in 2010, to extend the use of the base until 2044.
