The Defense Security Cooperation Agency has notified US Congress of a potential sale of 125 M1A1 Abrams tank kits for co-production and associated weapons to Egypt.

Under the estimated $1.329bn foreign military sale, Egypt has also requested 125 M256 armament systems, 125 M2 .50-caliber machine guns, 250 M240 7.62mm machine guns, 125 AGT-1500 M1A1 series tank engines and transmissions and 120mm test cartridges as well as spare and repair parts.

The additional M1A1 tanks will provide Egypt with a modern tank fleet, enhancing its capability to meet current and future threats.

The tanks will also contribute towards updating Egypt’s military capability while further enhancing interoperability between Egypt, the US, and other allies.

General Dynamics, Honeywell International and Allison Transmission Motors will be the prime contractors.
