The UK will soon announce the withdrawal of at least 500 of its troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2012, following a similar reduction by the US.

The Sunday Times reported that UK Prime Minister David Cameron would soon announce the withdrawal, which could result in reducing the number of troops in Afghanistan below 9,000.

The drawdown marks a major step towards the prime minister’s stated aim of having all UK soldiers out of Afghanistan by 2015.

The UK Ministry of Defence refused to confirm details, but stated that some troops would be brought home early.

The withdrawal is in addition to the pull-out of 400 UK support staff by February 2012.

Western nations have set the end of 2014 as a deadline to hand over control of security to Afghan forces.
