Small satellite synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) technology provider ICEYE has signed an agreement with the US Army Space and Missile Defense Technical Center (SMDTC).
Under the cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA), ICEYE will further the development of advanced Earth observation technology.

SMDC Space Directorate leader colonel Matt Anderson said: “The US Army is looking for affordable and versatile SAR and other advanced sensor technology to enhance its many systems and missions.
“High-quality, frequent-revisit commercial SAR is particularly important to us because it enables day-night, all-weather imaging and complements national satellite systems.”
The joint research and development effort is aimed at exploring SAR related concepts and will support US Army missions.
Exploration of cost-effective SAR systems such as imagery tasking and uplink, image processing, image dissemination and SAR satellite downlink and ground station(s) are the areas of interest in the agreement.

By GlobalDataICEYE and SMDTC will majorly focus on data latency reduction between the sensor and the shooter, and interfacing with the US Army’s existing Common Ground Terminal (CGT).
The two parties will also emphasise future tactical intelligence targeting access node (TITAN) and a mobile ground station system, which is currently in development.

“We look forward to working closely with SMDTC as we bring ICEYE’s first-of-its-kind capability to a variety of US Army experiments and demonstrations.”
Recently, Capella Space signed a CRADA agreement with SMDTC to integrate its SAR data into the US Army’s Payload Development Lab.
