Boeing’s director of domestic Chinook programmes Patrick Donnelly said, "We have a critical design review coming up in January and we’ve already started to build flight ballistic test specimens and other things to qualify it."

The company will equip the Chinooks with a new rotor blade and new floor with embedded rollers to make loading pallets easier.

The CH-47 Chinook is a heavy-lift high-altitude helicopter deployed for a multitude of missions including military, humanitarian, disaster relief, search and rescue, and firefighting missions.

The army is expected to award the contract in early 2013.
