It used 380MHz of spectrum in the mid-band and mmWave to provide 1.5Gbps high-speed downloads and sub 15msec latency.

Last month, GE Research launched two projects, totalling $36m, to create smart warehouses facilities at two separate military bases.

Being delivered in partnership with the DoD, the projects are for the Naval Base in San Diego, California, and the Marine Corps Logistics Base (MCLB) in Albany, Georgia.

They are intended to demonstrate the use of smart 5G-enabled technologies to track and manage thousands of assets in real-time and improve workforce efficiency in warehouse operations in support of the DoD.

DoD 5G Initiative principal director Dr Joe Evans said: “Advanced telecommunications are critical to the US economy and our way of networked warfighting. The initiative is a major DoD programme that is intended to ensure US leadership in 5G and beyond.”

The more than $500m Tranche 1 5G projects also include a dynamic spectrum-sharing project at the US military’s Hill Air Force Base and an augmented reality / virtual reality training project at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

The 5G Initiative involves three ‘thrusts’, namely Accelerate, Operate Through and Innovate.
