The US Army has awarded a contract modification to Kongsberg Gruppen for further extension of the existing common remotely-operated weapon station (CROWS) II programme.
The Nkr195m ($34m) contract extension forms part of an Nkr508m ($84.5m) increased CROWS II frame contract signed by the company in July, and covers supply of spare parts to the army.

Valued at $1.4bn, CROWS is a joint acquisition programme for remote weapon stations and is designed to offer improved protection capabilities, training support and development for the US Army’s vehicle programmes.
Operating as the primary remote weapon station (RWS) of US forces, the Protector RWS in the CROWS II configuration enhances troop protection and attack by enabling soldiers to acquire and engage targets from safer distances.
Designed to be mounted on a wide range of vehicles, the RWS also supports the MK19 grenade machine gun, 0.50-calibre M2 machine gun, M240B machine gun, as well as M249 squad automatic weapon.
In addition, the programme is supported by BAE Systems through delivery of thermal imaging modules or sights for installation on CROWS II-equipped vehicles, such as the M1114 high mobility multi-wheeled vehicle (HMMWV) and mine-resistant ambush protected (MRAP) vehicles.

By GlobalDataKongsberg also secured a $970m contract for the next phase of the Protector M153 CROWS RWS programme in August, following a full and open competition.
As part of the first $9.1m order, the company will manufacture the systems and provide technical engineering support for a period of five years.
Kongsberg has supplied more than 10,000 M153 CROWS units to the US Army since August 2007.
