eXpeditionary Mobile Air Defense Integrated System (X-MADIS) is an integrated anti-drone system developed by Ascent Vision Technologies (AVT).

The system is mainly used for detecting, locating, tracking identifying and defeating small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS) and drone swarms. The soft-kill solution helps to combat the increasing threat of hostile nano, micro and mini-size unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

The revolutionary counter drone technology can be integrated into fixed, mobile and on-the-move platforms. It is operated across the world for protecting VIPs, civilians, combat forces, and critical infrastructure.

X-MADIS was exhibited at the AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition in October 2019. AVT completed the field testing of the system for the US Air Force, in December 2019.

AVT released its latest variant of X-MADIS with advanced portable, on-the-move counter sUAS capabilities, in April 2020.

Orders and deliveries

AVT secured a $23m contract from the US Air Force for delivering a full suite of X-MADIS in August 2019.

In May 2020, AVT delivered several latest X-MADIS units to an undisclosed US DoD customer.

X-MADIS design and features

X-MADIS weighs 26kg and can operate at temperatures ranging between -40C and +55°C. The detection range varies for different instruments including 3.5km for Nano UAS, 15km for medium sized UAS, 25km for fighter detection range and 30km for utility helicopter.

The anti-drone system incorporates all-threat tactical air surveillance radar systems, which can detect all aerial threats including UAS, missiles, rockets and mortars. The four all-threat air surveillance radar faces have the capacity to detect sUAS within a 5km range with reliable hemispheric coverage.

The counter drone system is integrated with all-threat tactical air surveillance radar, gyro-stabilised optical sensor (EO and MWIR imagery), C2 interface, and electronic warfare system.

The system combines radar with a radio frequency (RF) detection sensor to offer reliable detection, classification and location of commercial sUAS. Its rugged electro-optical/infrared (EO/IR) imaging system ensures the accurate identification of sUAS in all light conditions.

Two gyro-stabilised optics integrated with smart features, artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities improve situational awareness. The counter drone system is capable of performing operations in high heat and humid conditions and is ideal for operations in urban, rural and littoral environments.

The advanced system features a range of hardware components for ruggedness and improved power distribution, while ensuring simpler setup and easy deployment.

CUAS Suite of X-MADIS

The CUAS Suite software provides a clear view of the aerial activity and is handled by a single operator. It also has a user-friendly interface for complete command and control of the operation.

The comprehensive suite reduces operator fatigue and errors and offers clear detection of sUAS in boxes. The software is capable of displaying daylight, MWIR and a map on a single touchscreen.

Optics and payload

X-MADIS can also be used for maritime applications as it is equipped with CM262M which combines full HD, four sensor configurations and an advanced video processor. It mainly offers enhanced detection, identification and tracking of sUAS platforms.

The system can carry a maximum payload of 11.8kg (26lb) including CM202U, CM262 and electronic warfare systems.

X-MADIS variants

X-MADIS Fixed Site is an effective solution for carrying out CUAS missions. It can be mounted on tripods and immovable installations. The system is used for protection of VIPs, critical infrastructure, public events and airports.

X-MADIS Mobile offers transportable solution for moving missions and the vehicles are equipped with radar, optics and a jammer. It is useful for performing forward operating base (FOB) surveillance and convoy escorts.

The X-MADIS On-The-Move (OTM) version provides an effective air defence and counter UAS solution. It is capable of performing operations on a vehicle moving at a speed of 64km/h on rough terrains.
